ZIG ZAG HOUSE

An old cottage extended by a series of intimate interconnecting buildings aligned at right angles and orientated to maximize sun and views onto courtyards and landscape beyond.

Our client, a garden lover with a passion for cooking, sought liberation from the dark, cramped and enclosed cottage. Their wish was for a new spacious, bright and airy extension directly connected to their garden. To achieve this the earlier adhoc kitchen extension was stripped away and in its place a bright south facing entrance sun-room both acts to reveal the character of the old cottage and linking it to the new extension. With windows on all sides the new kitchen/dining room is brightly lit all day. The east facing bedroom area catches both morning and evening light. The house opens onto a series of herbaceous, landscaped, vegetable and recreational gardens.

Awards An Taisce Ellison Award Highly Commended
